Damsel in Distress
Foreword
Monsoon nights are often humid due to the high moisture content in the air and the lack of breeze. The clouds appear low and heavy, with intermittent flashes of lightning and the roll of thunder. The impending threat of rain makes an impact on the nocturnal creatures and all of us. People are often in a hurry to reach the safety of their homes before the torrential downpour can unleash another wet spell. This is a poetic expression of one such night in a small coastal town in India.
It is a humid monsoon night
Low cloud cover holds tight
Lightning flashes are bright
Rolling thunder echoes fright
Bullfrogs chorus scales the bar
Crickets join the match at par
An owl is on the nightly prowl
A hungry bull begins to growl
Commuters hurry home bound
Racing vehicles sound abound
Street lights suddenly go down
Darkness descends on the town
A lonely pedestrian strides along
Shadows on road appear strong
Barking street dogs sends a chill
Damsel in distress makes a call
