Monsoon Magic

MONSOON MAGIC

Foreword

As a young boy, I was always fascinated by the arrival of the monsoon. It provided the much-needed relief from the blazing Indian summer. The term 'monsoon' is derived from the Arabic word ‘mausim’ which means a time or a season. In India, the monsoon season is from mid-June to mid-October.

The monsoon season has a lingering impact on the minds and hearts of creative people in the country. Numerous poets and writers over the ages have expressed their feelings on the magic of monsoon on the Indian subcontinent.

India is largely an agrarian economy, and the timely arrival and departure of monsoons not only affects the indices at the bourses but also the fortunes of the ruling party. The monsoon also has its share of woes due to floods. But it is a wonderful season. Its magic enthrals and encompasses one and all.

‘Monsoon Magic’ is one of my early poems that I penned more than two decades ago but never published due to various reasons.

A white umbrella in monsoon rain

Floating clouds

Rumbling thunder

Flares of lightning

Droplets of rain

Flapping wind

Rippling water-pockets

Screaming peacock

Chorus of toads

Frolicking children

Blossoming flowers

Season of plenty

Peasant songs

The monsoon magic
