SILENT SORROW: A PANDEMIC'S TALE
Foreword
The second phase of the pandemic appeared with a vengeance after the government decided to drop the guard and began organizing massive public rallies to win the assembly elections in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry in 2021. The hospitals in the country overflowed with patients as COVID-19 cases rose rapidly and the demand for oxygen cylinders and ventilators outstripped supplies. Long queues for funerals were seen across several cities, and dead bodies were seen floating near the funeral ghats at Varanasi, desecrating the holy Ganges.
Placid waters mirror despair,
Pyres alight, a funeral tune,
Crackling flames consume the air.
Soulful cries from mourning kin,
The eerie silence, a haunting shroud,
Ambulance sirens, a mournful din,
Floating bodies, a ghastly crowd.
Desecrated, the holy Ganges weeps,
Coronavirus, its toll unmeek,
At Varanasi, where death creeps,
Ghats reek, where sorrow peaks.
