Scorching Summer

Scorching Summer

Foreword

The scorching summer of 2024 in India is certainly memorable for a host of reasons. The severe and prolonged heatwave conditions that prevailed across the country have accounted for hundreds of deaths in many states. The official death toll from the heatwave is an underestimation. Several dead bodies were awaiting postmortems to ascertain the cause of death. The common man endured the unrelenting heat from April to June while the central and state governments were busy conducting the general elections. Temperatures in New Delhi, Nagpur, and several other cities in the country recorded 50 degree centigrade. This poem tries to capture the intensity of the scorching summer of 2024.

The blazing summer sun emitting hot humid rays

The blazing sun, relentless and bright

No respite, from morning to night

Mercury soaring, a fiery sky

White and blinding, as days go by

Dry wells, parched fields lay bare

Cracked earth surface, gasping for air

Muddy waters, shriveled plant kingdom

Distressed farmer, eroding dream

Birds search for water, animals seek shade

Dust storms spiral, leaves rustle and move

Met office heatwave alerts appear

Climate scientists debate El Niño indicator

Common folk endure the blazing heat

Scorching summer is a yearly feat

More solar flares are spreading

Can mankind continue enduring
